SALT MARSHES AND SALT PRODUCERS OF THE CANARY ISLANDS ASSOCIATION

This association was constituted in 1994 by the Padrón Lleó family, as a founder member, among other salt marshes of the Archipelago, with the following objectives:

- Introduce tax incentives as it is an environmentally friendly industry.

- Obtain the designation Biosphere Reserve on those islands stated so for marine salt.

- Obtain the denomination as an ecologic product and with its own Denomination of Origin for Canary Islands marine salt.

- Finance a study on new packaging formats, new potential demands, new manufacture possibilities and the development of a corporative image common to all Canary Islands marine salt.

- Incorporate our product to the agricultural-food activity.

- Modify the Judgement about Imports and Goods Delivery (Arbitrio sobre Importaciones y Entrega de Mercancías - AIEM) on the Canary Islands, in a way that imported salt onto the Archipelago is taxed, favouring this way competitivity of marine salt produced on the Islands.

- Introduce Canary Islands marine salt in the commercialization circuit established by the Canary Islands Government for food production on the Islands, trying to generalize its consumption, like MercoCanarias and similar organizations do.

- Promote marine salt produced on the Islands in the media through institutional campaigns, pointing out its contribution to good health, with charges met by Public Budget.

- Promote agreements with distributors and retailer food traders, preferential distribution for Canary Islands marine salt, even placing salt in a prominent and eye-catching place inside the retailer shops.

- Promote agreements with the islands employers, so they actively support among their members the preferential consumption of the Islands marine salt.

- Study the possibility of implementing direct helps to the Islands marine salt for its contribution to the environment and landscape maintenance.

- Introduce marine salt on the list of products of which transport can be subsidized.

- Promote agreements with Canary Islands Universities, so they encourage dissertations, thesis and other type of research studies on varied aspects of salt and the salt marshes on the Canary Islands, especially those connected with the search of new markets.

It is to be pointed out the collaboration received form organizations such as the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands (Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias - I.T.C.), dependent on the Regional Industry Ministry of the Canary Islands Government, and the Marine Sciences Institute of Taliarte, through spreading, defence and research of the Canary Islands salt marshes and its biological species which exist in the salt environment.
